Where does Keystone’s water come from?

Like most of the county, Keystone’s primary water source is the Hillsborough River. When the river cannot meet demand during extended or extreme dry periods, Hillborough County buys treated regional groundwater, surface water and desalinated seawater from Tampa Bay Water.

Contaminants

The water sources for Keystone residences generally contain trace amounts of a number of different contaminants. Local governments routinely test and provide reports on these. They are required to keep these levels below what is considered toxic, according to regulation.
This includes:

• Arsenic
• Chromium
• Chlorine
• Lead
• Harmful bacteria

However since residents only drink about 1% of the water in these systems, the government does not have the resources to eliminate all of these contaminants completely.
