New Port Richey mainly gets its water supply from groundwater sources. Like many other areas in central Florida, New Port Richey relies on wells that extract water from the Floridan Aquifer, a massive underground limestone structure. The Aquifer underlies much of the state and serves as a primary source of drinking water in the Southeast.
The groundwater from these wells is treated and distributed to residential, commercial, and industrial properties through the city’s water distribution system.
Contaminants
The water sources for New Port Richey’ residences generally contain trace amounts of a number of different contaminants. Local governments routinely test and provide reports on these. They are required to keep these levels below what is considered toxic, according to regulation.
This includes:
- Arsenic
- Chromium
- Chlorine
- Lead
- Harmful bacteria
However since residents only drink about 1% of the water in these systems, the government does not have the resources to eliminate all of these contaminants completely.
