Where does St. Petersburg’s water come from?

St. Pete’s drinking water comes from a combination of ground and surface water, which undergoes a three-step treatment process before being distributed to residents. St. Pete is part of Tampa Bay Water, which also supplies drinking water to Hillsborough County, Pasco County, Pinellas County, New Port Richey and Tampa.

Contaminants

The water sources for St. Petersburg residences generally contain trace amounts of a number of different contaminants. Local governments routinely test and provide reports on these. They are required to keep these levels below what is considered toxic, according to regulation.

This includes:

• Arsenic
• Chromium
• Chlorine
• Lead
• Harmful bacteria

However since residents only drink about 1% of the water in these systems, the government does not have the resources to eliminate all of these contaminants completely.
